Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - For the second time in a week, the Honkers had to play two games in one day due to rain. The Honkers picked up the sweep earlier in the week against the Duluth Huskies, and today picked up a split with the Thunder Bay Border Cats, losing game one 6-5 and coming up victorious in game two 8-2.
In game one the Honkers got a great effort out of the bullpen to start the game. Erik Mattingly (Jr, Creighton), and Jordan Jakubov (RsJr, Kansas) helped in relief of last nights starter Kevin Johnson (So, Illinois). Mattingly was the pitcher of decision, pitching the first two innings of the resumed game, allowing just one run on two hits. Jakubov pitched the final four innings for the Honkers only allowing two hits, with four runs.
The Honkers could not overcome the Border Cats however, scoring two runs in the ninth inning to lessen the gap, but stranded the bases loaded to end the game.
The Honkers got a great outing from Matt Strahm (Fr, Neosho County CC) in game two on the mound. Strahm pitched six innings of the abridged seven inning game before yielding to the bullpen. In his six innings he allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five batters. Earning his first win of the season, Strahm is now 1-1 this summer, with an ERA of 3.57.
Davy Wright (So, TCU) had a great day at the plate, going 3-for-6 with five runs batted in on the day. Wright finished game one 2-for-3 with two RBI and then 1-for-3 in game two with three RBI. Davy also had three doubles on the day, for a league high nine this season.
Also having big days at the plate were Ryan Hambright (So, Oregon) who went 4-for-8 on the day, and Devin Thaut (Jr, Southern Polytechnic State) who went 4-for-10 on the day.
With the split the Honkers are now 6-9 on the season. The Honkers will continue the home stand tomorrow, June 16, when the St. Cloud River Bats arrive at Mayo Field for a two game series.
The Honkers will have Drew Bowen (Jr, Oral Roberts) on the mound, making his first start, and second appearance of the season. Bowen relieved in a game last weekend, pitching 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and one run. The first pitch will be at 7:05, at Mayo Field.
