Honkers Edge River Bats 3-2
June 16, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Rochester Honkers News Release
The Honkers picked up their second winning streak of the season, defeating the St. Cloud River Bats by a score of 3-2 tonight, improving their record to 7-9 on the season, trying to lessen the gap in the chase for the first half championship.
The Honkers got a solid start out of Drew Bowen (Jr, Oral Roberts) making his second appearance, but first start of the season. Bowen started the first inning strong, getting two quick outs, before allowing one run in the first inning.
Bowen would pitch the first seven innings, allowing six hits and two runs, while striking out two batters. Bowen had made one appearance before this start, pitching 1.1 innings on Monday, June 13.
The Honkers helped Bowen after the shaky start, answering St. Cloud's run, and doubling it. The Honkers had two runners on for Bryan Karraker (Jr, New Mexico State), who knocked a double to deep centerfield. River Bats centerfielder Korey Wacker would make a good attempt at the catch, dropping it while he slammed into the fence. Wacker would fall to the ground in pain after getting the ball in, but would stay in the game.
Jake Marasco (So, Kansas) had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, improving his batting average to .230. Karraker went 1-for-4 on the game with just the two RBI in the first inning.
The Honkers would get two strong innings of relief out of the bullpen, first from Robert Hansen (Fr, Vanderbilt) in the eighth. Hansen struck out one batter, and got a double play after hitting the first batter he faced. Austin House (So, New Mexico) would come in for the ninth inning, and earned his first save of the season. House got a ground out, a fly out, and a strike out, to pick up the save.
The Honkers and River Bats return to the diamond tomorrow June 17 at 7:05 pm. The Honkers will look for their second, two-game sweep of the season, and to improve their record to one game below five-hundred.
The Honkers will have Aaron Siefken (Jr, Bethany Lutheran) on the mound. Aaron is third in the Northwoods League in ERA with a microscopic ERA of 0.64. The Honkers are now halfway done with the six game home stand before traveling to St. Cloud and Duluth for a six game road trip.
