Madison Mallards News Release
GREEN BAY, WI - June 16, 2011. The Madison Mallards were defeated by the Green Bay Bullfrogs 9-0 in front of 1,227 fans at Johannes Stadium Thursday night.
One night after scoring thirteen total runs, eleven of which came in the first inning, the Mallards were shut out for the first time this season.
Silencing the Mallards' hitters for Green Bay was starting pitcher Josh Martin (Samford). Martin went five complete innings, giving up no runs on five hits. He walked only one batter and struck out four. With his outing, Martin improved his record to 2-0 on the season.
There were a few bright spots for the Ducks offensively, as Mike McQuillan (Iowa) and Nate Theunissen (Central Michigan) each had two hits. Unfortunately for Madison, the rest of the team was only able to muster two.
Mark Garcia (UC Riverside) and John Colella (Holy Cross) both came on in relief after Martin was removed. The duo combined for four innings of work and allowed only one hit. Garcia accounted for the only walk the pair gave up, and each pitcher struck out two batters.
Green Bay was able to improve on its already league-leading team ERA, which now stands at a robust 2.15.
After tallying a then season-high eleven hits in a 7-3 win over Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday, Green Bay collected 15 hits off of the Mallards.
Three of those hits came from Matt Ozanne (Santa Clara), who raised his season batting average to .375. Ozanne also drove in a run and stole a base.
Billy Moon (Gonzaga) came on as a pinch hitter for Green Bay and had the biggest stat line of the night for either team. Moon went 2-for-2 with a home run and four driven in.
Mallards' starter Cash Collins (Wofford) took the loss after a very impressive beginning to his season.Collins, now 2-1, gave up four runs (three earned) through six and one-third innings.
The wheels really came off for the Mallards in the seventh and eighth innings, in which they saw Green Bay score a combined seven times to put the game out of reach.
Zach White (Wake Forest) and Travis Parker (St. Louis) both made relief appearances.
