Honkers Lose Despite Three Home Runs

(Rochester, MN) - The balls were flying out of Knute Nelson Memorial Park in Alexandria, MN on Wednesday night, but the Honkers fell to the Beetles by a score of 8-5, despite smacking three home runs.

The Beetles scored first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning on four hits and an error by third baseman Reid Roper (Illinois).

The Honkers got one of those back in the top of the second inning when first baseman Trevor Podratz (Hawaii) scored from third base on a wild pitch. The Beetles then scored two more in the bottom half of the frame to take a 4-1 lead.

Center fielder Justin Parr (Illinois) launched a solo home run in the top of the fifth to improve his hitting streak to 20 games. The blast was Parr's sixth home run of the season and it cut the deficit to two runs at 4-2. Four batters later with a runner on, Roper belted a two-run homer to tie the game at 4-4.

In the sixth, catcher Chad Wallach (Cal State Fullerton) put the Honkers on top 5-4 with a solo shot of his own. Wallach finished the night 2 for 5.

The Beetles took the lead once again in the bottom of the seventh on four hits highlighted by a two-run home run from the bat of Alexandria second baseman Tanner Vavra (Valparaiso). After seven frames, the Beetles honed an 8-5 lead.

Rochester starter Matt Kent (Texas A&M) worked 7.0 innings and surrendered eight runs (six earned) on 13 hits. With the loss, Kent's record falls to 3-6.

Beetles closer Anthony Bazzani (Eastern Kentucky) picked up his 15th save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Tomorrow, August 9th, the Honkers (11-20, 26-40) play game two of the three-game series with the Beetles (18-13, 31-35) in Alexandria, MN at 7:05 PM. On the hill for the Honkers is right-hander Mason Pingel (Western Illinois), who makes his second start of the summer. In four games this season, Pingel is 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA. Lefty Ali Simpson (Bethune-Cookman) gets the starting nod for the Beetles. Simpson carries a 2-1 record with a 5.75 ERA in 10 outings.

The Honkers are back in Rochester, MN to play the St. Cloud Rox at 7:05 PM on Saturday, August 11th.
