August 8, 2012 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Mequon, WI - August 8, 2012. The Madison Mallards (20-10, 36-29) look to win their third straight against the Lakeshore Chinooks (15-15, 32-33) tonight at Kapco Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
On Tuesday the Mallards scored five runs in the eighth inning to pull away from the Chinooks for a 7-4 win. The burst was initiated by first baseman Jeff Zimmerman's (Northern Illinois) 12th homer of the year, a leadoff solo blast to right, and capped by a bases clearing three RBI triple by left fielder Derek Fisher (Virginia). Mallards starter Bobby Poyner (Florida) turned in another great performance for his fourth win of the season. Through 6.0 innings the lefty allowed one run on seven hits while striking out five.
Making his 10th start of the season for the Mallards tonight is right-hander Kurt Giller (Oral Roberts). In his last start Giller (3-1) delivered his best performance as a Mallard, earning the win after surrendering just one earned run on five hits and three walks in 6.0 innings of work.
Starting for the Chinooks will be left-hander Cody Glenn (LSU). In his last outing Glenn (3-4) went 7.2 innings, giving up one run on four hits and three walks during a 3-1 loss to the Wisconsin Woodchucks (25-5, 42-23).
Shattering Expectations:
With the season winding down, several Mallards are closing in on single season franchise records. Right fielder Tyler Marincov (North Florida) needs to play out the remaining five games on the schedule to tie hitting coach Jordan Comadena for the record in games played with 68. Marincov also needs 11 hits to break Kyle Gaedele's record of 88 that he set in 2010.
Calling in the Calvary:
The second half of the season has seen the Mallards offense boosted by the production of college teammates Nicholas Howard (Virginia) and Derek Fisher (Virginia). The two Cavaliers have combined for 14 home runs and 59 RBIs since joining the team in June.
Up Next:
The Mallards cap their five game series with the Chinooks on the road tomorrow night. First pitch of that game is scheduled for 6:35 pm.
The Mallards return to the "Duck Pond" on Friday, August 10th to take on the Wisconsin Woodchucks (25-4, 44-22). That night will feature Zimbrick Honda LEGO logo kits presented by briXwerX Studios.
The 2012 season is upon us! Single-game tickets are on-sale for all Mallards home games!
The Madison Mallards are part of the 16-team Northwoods League. The Northwoods League has more teams, plays more games, and draws more fans than any other Summer Collegiate Baseball League in North America.
