CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa â The clouds have cleared bringing out the sun ... It must be Monday.
And what better way to spend a Monday evening than at the ballpark, watching the Cedar Rapids Kernels close out their four-game series against the West Michigan Whitecaps. Game time is 6:30 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
The Kernels won the first game of the series on Friday night, but have lost the last two. They need a win tonight to split the series.
The Kernels (19-17) also need a win to stay within one game of second-place Peoria. The Kernels have 33 games remaining in the first half, which ends on June 15.
After tonight's game, the Kernels play four games at Dayton. They return home on Saturday to open an eight games in nine days stand against South Bend and Clinton.
The excitement level cranks up a notch during the next homestand, which follows:
May 17 â vs. South Bend, 5 p.m. Skyy Dogs USA and Rockin' Ray. A Dog Day weekend for the Kernels starts with the appearance of Rockin' Ray and his Frisbee catching Skyy Dogs USA. They will perform between innings.
May 18 â vs. South Bend, 2 p.m. Bark in the Park and Skyy Dogs USA. Bring your pooch to the game for $4 and sit in the lawn section. The $4 will be donated to the Linn County Humane Society. Pet owners must pre-register their dogs to make sure their vaccinations are current. Rockin' Ray and Skyy Dogs USA will perform between innings.
May 19 â vs. South Bend, 6:30 p.m.
May 20 â vs. South Bend, Noon. KDAT Lunch at the Ballpark/Breast Cancer Awareness Day. One lucky fan will win a pink chair signed by all of the members of the 2003 Cedar Rapids Kernels.
May 22 â vs. Clinton, 6:30 p.m. Perfect Game Baseball Cards/MDA ALS Night. The first 1,000 children age 12-under will receive a free set of Kernels baseball cards, courtesy of Perfect Game USA.
May 23 â vs. Clinton, 6:30 p.m. Commercial Federal Banks Fireworks Night. It's a Big Bang Friday at the New Veterans Memorial Stadium for the first of four fireworks nights during the season.
May 24 â vs. Clinton, 5 p.m.
May 25 â vs. Clinton, 2 p.m. Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet Day. Half-price hot dogs, coupons for a free slice of apple pie from Hy-Vee and a chance to win a 2002 Chevy Cavalier from Pat McGrath Chevyland. Registration is now taking place at the stadium and Pat McGrath Chevyland for the 2002 Cavalier. The winner will be drawn during this game. Winners must be 18 with valid drivers license and proof of insurance. Need not be present to win.
