West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

The West Michigan Whitecaps first stop on their three city, 12-game road trip was a successful one. The Whitecaps defeated the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 6-3, in Iowa on Monday night behind a pair of two-run home runs. The victory was the third straight for the Whitecaps over the Kernels after Cedar Rapids won the opening game of the series.

With the score 1-1, the Whitecaps grabbed the lead in the third inning on Brent Clevelen's run-scoring single. One inning later, the 'Caps Victor Mendez launched his third homer of the season with a man on base to give the 'Caps a 4-1 lead.

The Kernels scored single runs in the fourth and sixth to make it a 4-3 game and it stayed that way until the ninth. In the Whitecaps ninth, Jody Roughton, who drove in five runs in the 'Caps win on Sunday, blasted his second homer of the year with a man on for a 6-3 West Michigan lead.

'Caps starter Humberto Sanchez won for the third time in his last four starts. Reliever Juan Figueroa survived a bases-loaded bottom of the ninth situation for his seventh save of the season.

The Whitecaps (20-18) now head to Geneva, Illinois, for a four game series against the Kane County Cougars. Game one against the Cougars, who own the best record in the league, will be on Tuesday night at 7:00 (Michigan time). Jon Connolly, who is 5-0 and leads the league in ERA, will start on the mound for the 'Caps.
