Cougars lose 5-3

The Ft. Wayne Wizards (22-15) overcame a lead off home run by Francis Gomez, and defeated the Kane County Cougars (26-12), 5-e at Memorial Stadium. The Wizards scored twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth inning, improving their record to 14-8 at home. The Cougars made it interesting in the ninth inning, scoring two runs off Eudy Morel. Marcus McBeth delivered a two-run single, plating home Kirk Nordness and John McCurdy. Dale Thayer, who struck out Nick Rogers and Francis Gomez to end the game, relieved Morel.

Nobuaki Yoshida (1-1), who made a spot start for the Wizards, due to Jon Huber being promoted to Lake Elsinore, earned the victory for the home team. Yoshida worked 6.2 innings, giving up only one run on five hits. Drew Dickinson (4-2) surrendered five runs and a season high, nine hits, to suffer the loss for Kane County. Dickinson also walked a season high three, and took his first loss since April 15.

The Cougars' bullpen continued to stay strong, hurling 2.1 scoreless innings.. Edwardo Sierra worked 1.1 scoreless innings in relief of Dickinson, and Manny Rodriguez worked the eighth inning allowing two hits and fanning one.

The Wizards began their scoring with two runs off Dickinson in the fourth inning. Steve Baker began the inning with a single and scored on a double by Doc Brooks. The next batter, Luis Cruz followed with an RBI single.

Dickinson ran into trouble in the fifth inning, surrendering three hits and three runs. L.J. Biernbaum knocked in the first run with an RBI triple.. Paul McAnulty followed with an RBI double, and Steve Baker gave the Wizards a 5-1 lead with an RBI ground out.

Cougars return home tomorrow night to begin a four-game series with the West Michigan Whitecaps; game time is 6:00 PM. Joe Blanton RHP (2-4, 2.83) will make his 8th start of the season for the Cougars; Jon Connolly LHP (5-0, 0.96), who leads the Midwest League in ERA, gets the starting nod for West Michigan.
