Homerun in 13th Sinks Travs

North Little Rock - The Frisco RoughRiders won the first game of a three-game set 3-2 over the Travelers in 13 innings on Sunday, July 10, at Dickey-Stephens Park. The loss snapped the Travs' four-game win streak.

Left fielder Michael Bianucci took Christian Scholl's first pitch of the top of the 13th inning over the left-field fence to put Frisco up 3-2 and reliever Jake Brigham pitched around a two-out error in the bottom of the inning to hold the Travs off.

Scholl (1-2, 2.38) got the loss giving up three hits in two innings. Brigham (4-5, 5.40) pitched two scoreless innings for the win, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out four.

Down 2-1, the Travs tied it up in the bottom of the ninth inning off of reliever Tanner Scheppers when Gabe Jacobo scored Luis Jimenez from third base with a one-out single to centerfield. Angel Castillo put Jacobo at second base with an infield single, but Clay Fuller struck out and Orlando Mercado grounded out to second to end the inning.

Righty Orangel Arenas started for the Travs and gave up two unearned runs in eight innings for the no decision. He surrendered seven hits and struck out one without a walk.

The Travs did not allow a run in 21 consecutive innings until Frisco scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning. Second baseman Davis Stoneburner reached on a throwing error by third baseman Gabe Jacobo to start the inning. After a fly out by James Swift for the first out, Renny Osuna doubled to left field to score Stoneburner for an unearned run and a 1-0 Frisco lead.

The Travs answered in the bottom of the third when centerfielder singled to right field. Fuller advanced to third on a hit-and-run provided by Mercado's single to left field and second baseman Jon Townsend tied the game 1-1 when he hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Fuller.

Lefty Robbie Erlin started for the RoughRiders and gave up one run on four hits in seven innings. He struck out four without a walk.

Frisco took the lead back when Bianucci reached on Jacobo's second error of the game. Bianucci went to third on a single to right field by Jose Ruiz and scored the second unearned run on catcher Elio Sarmiento's sacrifice fly to right, putting the RoughRiders up 2-1.

The Travs threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning with the help of two errors by the RoughRiders. Shortstop Darwin Perez reached on a two-out fielding error by third baseman Mitch Hilligoss. First baseman Chris Pettit got on by catcher's interference, which is considered an error, and Perez and Pettit were successful in a double steal to put runners at second and third. Jimenez popped up to the third baseman to end the inning.

The RoughRiders loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the eighth inning, but the Travs got out of it unscathed. Arenas gave up a lead-off double to Osuna, a single to Engle Beltre and hit Jonathan Greene with a pitch. Arenas got Bianucci to line out to Jacobo at third base, Jose Ruiz popped up to Darwin Perez at shortstop and got Sarmiento to groundout to first base to get out of the bases-loaded jam.

Townsend and Perez reached on a walk and a hit by pitch to start the bottom of the 10th inning, but Pettit popped out to the catcher for the first out attempting to sacrifice bunt the runners to second and third, and Jimenez grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Osuna led the top of the 12th off with his fourth hit of the game, but was erased when Beltre attempted to sacrifice bunt him to second, but popped it to the first baseman Pettit who stepped on first to double Osuna up. Greene fouled out to Mercado to end the inning.

Mercado hit a one-out double in the bottom of the 12th inning, but Townsend struck out the next at bat. Perez walked, but Pettit hit Jake Brigham's first pitch for a ground out and the end of the inning.

Frisco outhit the Travs 13 to 8 and were 3 for 13 with runners in scoring position, leaving 11 men on base. The Travs batted 1 for 9 with RISP and left 10 men on in a game that lasted three hours and 52 minutes.

Relievers Steven Geltz and David Carpenter combined for three scoreless innings and three strikeouts, while giving up three hits. Mercado went 2 for 5 and Jacobo went 2 for 6 for the Travs.

Osuna went 4 for 6 with an RBI, Greene went 2 for 5 and Ruiz batted 2 for 6 for the RoughRiders.

The Travs will play the RoughRiders in the second game of their three-game set on Monday, July 11, at Dickey-Stephens Park. Lefty Trevor Reckling (4-6, 3.65) will start for the Travs and lefty Ben Snyder (6-2, 4.08) will start for the RoughRiders.

Reckling gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits in five innings his last start on July 5. He got the win against Frisco and struck out three without a walk. Snyder picked up the loss in the same game, giving up six runs on nine hits in four and two-third innings. He struck out five and walked two. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 and gates open at 6:10.
