Homers Power Charlotte Past Indy
August 19, 2007 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
FORT MILL, S.C. -- Left-hander Heath Phillips allowed just one run over seven innings, while center fielder Alex Sanchez and designated hitter Kenny Perez blasted home runs to help Charlotte post a 7-1 win over Indianapolis Sunday afternoon at Knights Stadium.
The Knights improve to 56-73 overall and 33-33 at home, while the Indians fall to 65-62 on the season and 30-35 on the road. Monday will be the Tribe's 273rd consecutive day with a record of .500 or better.
Indianapolis continues to trail Durham in the International League's Wild Card race, while Toledo (IL West), Richmond (South) and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (North) still lead their respective divisions.
Phillips (7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) earned the win, improving to 11-7. He dealt with runners in the first, third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings, but escaped each jam without any damage.
After Phillips, Charlotte used a pair of right-handed relievers -- Jason Childers (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB) and Dewon Day (1.0 IP) -- to nail down the win and two-game series split.
The Knights wasted no time scoring, pushing across four runs in the first. Sanchez led off by hammering his first Triple-A roundtripper of 2007 -- a shot over the right-field wall. 3B Earl Snyder and K. Perez added RBI singles in the inning, while SS Tomas Perez dropped a squeeze bunt to score another run.
Charlotte added to its advantage in the third when K. Perez launched his sixth Triple-A dinger of the season -- a three-run shot to right center. The long ball came after T. Perez beat out an infield single and 1B Casey Rogowski lined a base knock to left.
K. Perez (2-for-4, 1 R, 4 RBI) and T. Perez (2-for-3, 1 R, 1 RBI) collected more than one hit for the Knights.
Indianapolis scored its lone run in the fifth when CF Andrew McCutchen clobbered the first Triple-A homer of his career. The Pirates' No. 1 prospect recorded the Tribe's only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4.
Indians RHP Marty McLeary (6.0 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO) was pinned with the loss, falling to 4-6.
Indianapolis moves on to a four-game set at IL West Division-leading Toledo. Indians RHP Victor Zambrano and Mud Hens LHP Andrew Miller are the probable pitchers for Monday's series opener at 7 p.m.
The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM and IndyIndians.com with Howard Kellman and Scott McCauley. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
