Norfolk Tides News Release
August 19, 2007 - The Richmond Braves plated four 5th inning runs en route to knocking off the Tides 5-2 Sunday night.
Trailing 2-1, Richmond sent seven men to the plate in the decisive 5th inning, pounding out five hits off of Norfolk starter Craig Anderson (6-3). Carlos Mendez doubled to lead off the inning, then advanced to third on an infield single by Doug Clark. Pete Orr then doubled home Mendez to tie the score, and Anderson uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Clark to score and put the Braves up 3-2. Two outs later, Brent Lillibridge and Brandon Jones followed with back-to-back run-scoring singles to give the Braves a three-run lead.
The loss was the first for Anderson since July 1, ending a stretch in which the southpaw had won five straight decisions. He allowed five runs - four earned - on seven hits in five innings of work, striking out three without walking a batter.
Blaine Boyer (3-2) earned the win for Richmond, allowing one run on two hits in five innings. Boyer came on in relief of Tanyon Sturtze, who allowed a run in the first inning of his second rehab appearance with the R-Braves. Boyer combined with former Tide Royce Ring to keep the Tides hitless from the 3rd through 7th innings, although Norfolk mounted a rally in the 8th.
The Tides loaded the bases with two outs against Braves reliever Chad Paronto in the 8th, but Paronto got Adam Stern to fly out sharply to right field to end the threat.
Joey Devine pitched a scoreless 9th for Richmond to earn his first save of the year.
Norfolk plated their runs on sacrifice flies by Cesar Crespo and Sebastien Boucher.
The Tides and Braves conclude their four-game home-and-home series on Monday night from Richmond, with first pitch from The Diamond scheduled for 7:00. Tim Kester (9-8, 5.10) will look to pick up his 10th victory of the season for the Tides against Richmond southpaw Dan Smith (3-3, 5.27).
