Homers Crucial in Doubleheader Split

Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets and West Virginia Power spilt Tuesday's doubleheader at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The GreenJackets shut out the Power 2-0 in game one. The Power turned the tables in game two shutting out the GreenJackets 2-0.

The GreenJackets got on the board in the second inning on a homerun to left-center off the bat of Ben Thomas. The other GreenJacket run came on a monster lead-off homerun from Brett Krill in the fifth inning. Krill's homer extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

Kelby Tomlinson, Shawn Payne, Jeff Arnold, Thomas, and Krill all had a single hit in the contest while Ashley Ponce led the Power offense with a 2-for-3 performance.

Edwin Escobar (4-5) picked up the win for the GreenJackets. Escobar struck out six batters and walked none in the team's eighth shutout of the season.

Stranded baserunners plagued the Power in the opener as they left eight men on the basepaths - stranding the bases full in the second and seventh innings. With the bases loaded in the seventh, Cody Hall struck out Gregory Polanco on three pitches to nail down his league-leading 18th save of the year.

Zack Von Rosenburg (2-3) suffered the hard-luck loss for the Power. Von Rosenburg gave up two runs on five hits to the GreenJackets while striking out two batters and walking no one.

After being shut out in game one, the Power came out in game two with a shut out of their own over Augusta, winning 2-0. For the Power it was their second shutout win of the season - both of them coming on this road trip.

The Power struck with the only two runs of the game when Jose Osuna launched a ball over the fence with a runner on first to take a two-run lead over the GreenJackets.

The GreenJackets were held to only two hits in the second game of the night. The hits came off the bats of Jose Flores and Jose Cuevas.

Shawn Payne's perfect stolen base streak came to an end tonight at 34 stolen bases after being caught stealing in the first inning. And after extending his hit streak to 12 games in the opener with a home run, Brett Krill's hitting streak came to an end after his 0-2 evening in the nightcap. Krill was left standing on the on-deck circle when the game ended.

Nick Kingham (2-7) recorded the win for West Virginia while Clario Perez picked up his second save of the season. Kingham struck out a season-high seven batters and walked none. At one point, Kingham retired 14 straight GreenJackets and he retired 16 of the final 17 he faced.

Clayton Blackburn (6-3) suffered the loss in game two, his first since May 3rd. Blackburn pitched six innings, giving up two runs on only five hits.

Despite the nightcap loss, the GreenJackets still finished the seven-game homestand with a 5-2 record andwill depart for an eight-game road trip on their off day Wednesday. Augusta opens a four-game series in Hagerstown on Thursday with the first of a four-game set against the Suns. Bryce Bandilla (1-3, 2.05) will get the ball for the GreenJackets in Thursday's opener. First pitch from Hagerstown comes at 7:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
