Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. (July 17, 2012) -- Greensboro's Wilfredo Gimenez squeezed a two-out single past first base in the bottom of the 11th inning to score Matt Smith and give the Grasshoppers a 5-4 win on Tuesday afternoon at NewBridge Bank Park.
Smith, who led off the ninth inning with a double and scored the tying run on a Rand Smith two-out single, opened the 11th inning with a base hit. After a sac-bunt and a groundout, Gimenez poked a 1-1 pitcher from reliever Max Peterson down the first base line to end the game. Smith finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a home run (11) in the second inning that tied the game, 1-1.
Brad Mincey (2-2) worked three scoreless innings for Greensboro to earn the win, and Peterson (0-1) took the loss for Kannapolis.
Greensboro closed a 4-1 gap in the sixth inning against Myles Jaye, as Ryan Rieger's RBI-single chased the Intimidators starter from the game three batters into the sixth inning. Kevin Vance allowed one inherited runner to score on a groundout but gave up no hits in his three relief innings.
Joe De Pinto led off the fifth inning with a double down the left field line, and Joey DeMichele drove him in with a two-out single up the middle to put Kannapolis up, 2-1. Chris Curley followed with a first-pitch home run (5) to left field, his fourth in the last three days, to put the Intimidators in front, 4-1.
Keenyn Walker led off the game drawing a walk and moving to second base on a Joey DeMichele single. Two ground outs later, Walker crossed the plate to put Kannapolis ahead 1-0 in the first inning.
The Intimidators return to CMC-NorthEast Stadium for a four-game series against Charleston on Thursday, July 19. The team will shoot off post-game fireworks on Saturday, July 21. For ticket information, call the box office at (704) 932-3267 or visit www.IntimidatorsBaseball.com .
