Hickory Crawdads News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Hickory Crawdads comeback attempt came up just short, as the Delmarva Shorebirds hung on, 8-5, before 1,712 fans at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury on Tuesday night.
The Shorebirds (9-16, 37-57) took an early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. After RHP Nick Martinez (L, 5-4) retired the first batter, 2B Jerome Pena singled his way on and quickly trotted home on a two-run shot by 1B Nicky Delmonico, making it 2-0.
Delmarva doubled the early lead with two more runs in the bottom of the second inning. With one on and one down, C Wynston Sawyer knocked an RBI double inside the left-field line. He then came home from second on an RBI base hit by CF Glynn Davis, stretching the lead to 4-0.
The Shorebirds kept swinging in the bottom of the third, striking for four more tallies. A Delmonico single started the inning and was followed by an RBI triple from DH Michael Ohlman. RF Brenden Webb knocked in Ohlman with an RBI single, and then scored later in the frame on an RBI ground out by Esposito. Sawyer capped the inning with another RBI double, lifting the Shorebirds in front, 8-0.
The Crawdads (15-11, 51-44) broke through against LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (W, 3-5) in the top of the fifth inning. LF Chris Grayson reached on an error to start the inning, before C Jorge Alfaro ripped an RBI double down the left-field line to bring him home. Alfaro took third on a fly out, and then darted home on an RBI ground out by DH Alejandro Selen, making it 8-2.
Hickory continued the comeback attempt with two more tallies in the top of the seventh. Grayson got himself on base to start the inning again, this time with a single. He then raced all the way home on an infield single by Alfaro and a throwing error by Delmonico. Alfaro moved to third on a fly out, and then came home on an RBI sacrifice fly by Selen to pull the 'Dads within four runs, 8-4.
The Crawdads refused to go down quietly, striking again in the top of the ninth against LHP Eric Wooten (S, 1). With one away, Grayson was hit by a pitch and then flew home on an RBI triple by Alfaro into the right-field corner. However, Wooten retired the next two 'Dads, closing the 8-5 win for Delmarva.
