
Early Runs Lift Shorebirds to 8-5 Win over Crawdads

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds (9-16) scored the first eight runs of the game and hung on for an 8-5 win over the Hickory Crawdads (15-11) on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds totaled 26 hits and 23 runs over the last two games of the series.
The Shorebirds jumped out early for a second straight night. Jerome Pena hit a one out single to right field in the first inning. Then, Nicky Delmonico launched a home run to right field to put the Shorebirds up 2-0.
In the second, Wynston Sawyer hit a double down the left field line to extend the lead to 3-0. Glynn Davis singled to score Sawyer to give the Shorebirds a 4-0 lead.
The Shorebirds added to the lead in the third. Delmonico led off with a single into center field. Then, Michael Ohlman connected on a triple to the right-center field wall to give the 'Birds a 5-0 lead. Brenden Webb followed with a grounder through the right side of the infield to score Ohlman. After a Jason Esposito ground out gave the Shorebirds a 7-0 lead, Sawyer drilled his second double of the game to the left field corner to put the Shorebirds up 8-0.
Shorebirds starter Eduardo Rodriguez earned his first win since June 6 in five strong innings. He did not allow a hit in the first three innings and yielded just three total hits in five innings.
The Crawdads chipped away with two runs in the fifth, two runs in the sixth inning and a run in the ninth inning, but Eric Wooten sealed the win by inducing a groundout to short off the bat of Alejandro Selen in the ninth inning.
Wooten picked up a four inning save. He surrendered three hits and two earned runs.
The Shorebirds next game is on Thursday, July 19 on the road against the West Virginia Power.
