Lexington Legends News Release
(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Charleston's Rob Refsnyder homered in the ninth inning to tie the game, then homered again in the 11th to give the RiverDogs the go-ahead run, and they went on to a 10-9 win over the Lexington Legends in 11 innings. The homers nullified a big comeback by the Legends, who scored six runs in the eighth inning to take a 9-8 lead.
The RiverDogs jumped out in front with two runs in the second inning. Saxon Butler led off with a home run. Dante Bichette Jr. followed with a double, moved to third on a bunt single by Casey Stevenson and scored as Reymond Nunez reached on a fielder's choice.
The Legends tied the game in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Justin Gominsky and an RBI single by Jordan Scott.
Charleston scored two more runs in the third. Cito Culver led off with a triple and scored on Refsnyder's single. Refsnyder moved to third on Ben Gamel's single and scored on a sacrifice fly by Butler.
The Legends answered with one run in the third, but the RiverDogs extended their lead to 8-3 with four runs in the seventh. Nick McCoy and Culver led off with singles, and Refsnyder walked to load the bases. Gamel followed with a bloop single to left, driving home McCoy and Culver, and moving Refsnyder to second. Refsnyder stole third with Butler at the plate, and Gamel later stole second during Butler's at-bat. After Butler struck out, Bichette singled to right field, plating both Refsnyder and Gamel.
But Lexington charged back in the eighth. Nolan Fontana reached on an error by third baseman Bichette. Jobduan Morales followed with an infield single, and Fontana moved to third on a throwing error by Charleston second baseman Casey Stevenson on Morales' hit. Gominsky then singled to left, scoring Fontana and moving Morales to second. After Scott singled to load the bases, Jordan Kreke reached on a fielder's choice as Morales scored and Gominsky was forced at third base. Zach Johnson followed with a single, scoring Scott and moving Kreke to second. Matt Duffy then singled, loading the bases again. After Ruben Sosa was inserted to run for Johnson at second base, Epps walked, forcing home Kreke to cut the lead to one at 8-7. Brandon Meredith popped out, but Fontana lined a single to left field, scoring both Sosa and Duffy to give the Legends a 9-8 advantage.
The lead didn't last long, as Refsnyder led off the ninth with a game-tying home run.
The game remained tied 9-9 until the 11th inning. With one out, Refsnyder hit his second home run of the game to put the RiverDogs in front for good. Refsnyder finished the game with three hits, including the two homers, three runs batted in and four runs scored.
Adam Smith (1-0) pitched the 10th and 11th innings to get the win.
Gabriel Garcia (1-2), who gave up the 11th-inning homer by Refsnyder, took the loss.
The Legends and RiverDogs will play game two of their four-game series on Friday night. First pitch at Whitaker Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
