
Savannah Sand Gnats Welcome 2012 Olympic Diver Brittany Viola to the Ballpark

Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats, the Class-A affiliate of the New York Mets, will welcome 2012 Olympic Diver, Brittany Viola, to Historic Grayson Stadium on Friday, August 24, 2012. Brittany Viola is the eldest daughter of Sand Gnats pitching coach, Frank Viola.
Viola is a 2011 graduate of the University of Miami where she double majored in Electronic Media and Sport Administration. Originally trained as an elite gymnast, Viola retired from the sport at the age of 13. She began diving while she was in high school.
In 2008 and 2011, she won the NCAA championship in diving's 10 meter platform. She was named to the United States Diving team for the 2009 World Aquatics Championships and the 2011 World Aquatics Championships held in Rome and Shanghai, respectively. She was named Captain of the U.S. Diving Team for the 2009 event.
Viola came close to making the 2004 U.S. Olympic Diving Team, finishing second on the 10-meter platform at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials while still in high school. In 2008, Viola was named an alternate for the U.S. Olympic Diving Team after finishing fourth in the trials. In June 2012, Viola took first place in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and secured her place on the U.S. Olympic team.
Brittany will be available prior to the Sand Gnats vs. Braves game on Friday, August 24, 2012 for autographs and photo opportunities. The autograph session will take place from 6:15-6:45pm on the main plaza.
