Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - Chris Colabello went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and he blasted a solo home run - one of three solo shots hit by New Britain - to lead the New Britain Rock Cats (38-34) to a 6-1 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels (36-38) in front of 9,077 fans in game two of a four-game series at The Diamond Saturday night. New Britain's three home runs are the most allowed in a single game by Richmond's pitching staff this season.
The Rock Cats grabbed the early lead with three runs in the opening frame. Aaron Hicks reached on a leadoff walk and promptly stole second base. Two batters later, Oswaldo Arcia reached on an error that put runners at the corners with one out. Colabello drove in Hicks with an RBI double and Evan Bigley followed with a two-run double, which gave New Britain a 3-0 lead.
New Britain added to its lead in the top of the third. After Richmond starter Andy Reichard struck out Arcia to begin the frame, Colabello belted his 11th home run of the season over the left field wall, which made it a 4-0 ballgame.
Nate Hanson deposited a 1-2 offering from Reichard over the left field fence with one out in the top of the fourth to extend New Britain's advantage to 5-0. After Reichard retired James Beresford, he was lifted from the contest after three and 2/3 innings pitched.
Hicks joined in on the home run parade with a solo blast off Richmond reliever Chris Gloor in the top of the seventh, which pushed New Britain's lead to 6-0.
The Flying Squirrels scratched a run across in the bottom of the ninth to avoid being shut out. Juan Ciriaco drew a one-out walk from Rock Cats reliever Luis Perdomo and Gary Brown ripped an RBI double, which scored Ciriaco and made it a 6-1 contest. But Perdomo recovered and retired Nick Liles and Daniel Mayora to preserve the win for New Britain.
Perdomo (4-4) allowed just one hit and one earned run in five innings of work en route to posting his fourth win of the season. Reichard (1-3) took the loss for Richmond after yielding four hits and five runs, four of which were earned.
The Squirrels will seek to end their two-game slide when the two teams meet in the third game of the series at The Diamond Sunday afternoon. The Flying Squirrels will send RHP Craig Westcott (6-4, 3.48) to the mound. New Britain is expected to counter with lefty Logan Darnell (5-6, 4.38). First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
