Fisher Cats Win Thriller, 2-1, Over Senators Van Kirk singles in winning run in eighth inning
MANCHESTER, NH - In a thriller at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium, Brian Van Kirk's RBI single in the eighth inning broke a 1-1 tie, and Ryan Goins threw out the potential tying run in the ninth to give the Fisher Cats (27-45) a 2-1 win over the Harrisburg Senators (37-36). The victory evens the series at one game each and gives the Fisher Cats the opportunity for a winning homestand with a triumph on Saturday afternoon.
The first five innings produced nothing but zeros on the scoreboard for each team. Yohan Pino, in his latest return from Triple-A Las Vegas, threw five scoreless innings for the Fisher Cats while Ryan Perry and Ryan Tatusko matched him for the Senators.
Harrisburg broke the tie in the top of the sixth, getting a lead-off single from Eury Perez. After a stolen base, Jeff Kobernus singled Perez home for a 1-0 Senators lead. Pino left after the inning, looking like he would take the loss.
The Fishser Cats wouldn't let that happen as they tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. The rally began with a triple to the gap in left-center by Kenen Bailli. Sean Ochinko followed with a single to left field to tie the game at 1-1.
An inning later, New Hampshire pulled ahead for the first time in the series. With one down, Mark Sobolewski doubled, taking third on a strikeout/wild pitch that put Kenen Bailli at first base. With two outs, Van Kirk singled to left to give the Fisher Cats the 2-1 advantage.
In the ninth, the Senators wouldn't go quietly. Tim Pahuta reached on a lead-off error against Sam Dyson (Save, 2). After a groundout, Zach Walters doubled to left-center, but pinch runner Sean Nicol was gunned out at the plate for the second out of the frame. Dyson then struck out pinch hitter Kris Watts to end the game for his second save of the season.
The teams continue the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 PM. The first 1,500 fans receive a Sal Fasano Bobble Stache collectible courtesy of Northeast Delta Dental. After the game, Kids Run the Bases presented by the Buyers Beware Program. To purchase tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com.
Sunday's pitching match-up features RHP Chad Jenkins (3-6, 5.20) for the Fisher Cats against Harrisburg LHP Danny Rosenbaum (7-3, 2.57). Radio coverage begins at 1:15 PM with Tom Gauthier and Bob Lipman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com. ~~~~~
