ROSEMONT, IL - The Winnipeg Goldeyes were swept by the Chicago Dogs Thursday, dropping a 9-4 decision in the series finale at Impact Field.
Chicago (14-4) opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning when Ryan Lidge singled home Matt Botcher to give the Dogs a 1-0 lead.
The Goldeyes (8-10) tied the game in their next at-bat as Tra Holmes punched a single through the right side of the infield to drive in Max Murphy.
The Dogs regained the lead shortly afterward on a fourth inning lead off home run to right field by Jesus Lujano that made the score 2-1 for the home side.
Winnipeg took a short-lived 4-2 lead in the top of the fifth when Murphy swatted his third home run of the series and fifth of the season. It was a three-run shot to left field that appeared to have just cleared the wall.
The offensive fireworks continued in the bottom of the inning as the Dogs' Josh Altmann hit his league-leading eighth round tripper of the year, a two-run blast to left-centre field that tied the game at 4-4.
Chicago went ahead for good in the sixth frame when Bottcher hit a two-out solo home run just inside the right field foul pole to make the score Dogs 5 Goldeyes 4.
The Dogs added four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI double by centre fielder Nick Heath, a run-scoring single by Lidge, and a two-run double by third baseman Donivan Williams.
Brenden Heiss (1-0) earned the victory for Chicago in relief of starter Trevor Lane. Heiss pitched a perfect sixth inning, striking out two of the three Goldeyes batters he faced.
Reliever RJ Martinez (2-1) was charged with the loss for Winnipeg. He worked three innings and allowed four runs on five hits.
Goldeyes designated hitter Dayson Croes doubled off the centre field wall on the first pitch of the ballgame. The Aruban rookie has now recorded base hits in 14 consecutive games dating back to May 14.
Winnipeg made a pair of roster moves Thursday. Left-handed relief pitcher Robert Klinchock was activated from the Injured List while outfielder Javeyan Williams was placed on the Injured List retroactive to May 29.
The Goldeyes now travel to Oconomowoc, Wisconsin for a three-game weekend series against the Lake Country DockHounds. Game one gets underway Friday at 6:35 p.m. Right-hander Joey Matulovich (0-2, 6.75 ERA) will start for Winnipeg against Lake Country lefty Ryan Hartman (1-1, 3.85 ERA).
Winnipeg returns home to Shaw Park Tuesday June, 6 when Chicago pays them a return visit.
