Salisbury, Md. - The West Virginia Power scored the first six runs of the game and cruised to a 6-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Sunday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Shorebirds have lost 13 consecutive games.
The Power scored a run in the first inning on a line drive triple that soared over the head of Brenden Webb in right field.
In the second, West Virginia added two more runs to build a 3-0 lead. The first three batters of the inning reached with singles. Then, Eric Avila grounded into a double play to bring home Wes Freeman. Elias Diaz would later score on a wild pitch by Jake Cowan.
The Power tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Andy Vasquez hit a two-run triple to the left-center field wall. Later, with two outs, Ty Kelly mishandled a hard ground ball, which allowed Chase Lyles to score from second.
The Shorebirds answered in the bottom of the fifth. Mikey Planeta led off with a line drive homer that hit the second set of fencing over the left field wall. It was his second homer of the year and his first home run in two seasons at Perdue Stadium. Two batters later, Garabez Rosa crushed a solo homer over the second set of fencing in left field to cut the deficit to 6-2.
Neither team scored the rest of the game. West Virginia went hitless over the final four innings while the Shorebirds had two hits over the final four innings.
Shorebirds reliever Luis Noel tossed three perfect innings. He retired all nine batters faced. David Walters came on in the ninth inning and tossed aside the Power in order.
West Virginia starter Eliecer Navarro earned his fifth win of the season over six innings.
Garabez Rosa paced the Shorebirds offense with a 3-for-3 night. It was his second straight three-hit game.
The Shorebirds play the season finale at 2:05 on Monday, September 5 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. LHP Matt Bywater is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
