Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Greenville Drive topped the 1st-Half Northern Division Champion Hickory Crawdads, 10-5, before 2,002 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Sunday evening. LF Jake Skole belted a pair of home runs for the 'Dads, driving in four RBIs in the game.
After Greenville (77-62, 39-30) took the lead on a solo homer by C Christian Vasquez in the top of the first, the Crawdads (79-57,39-29) raced in front with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. With one down, 1B Jhonny Gomez singled against RHP Keith Couch (W, 7-5) to spark the rally. CF Braxton Lane worked a walk that put two runners on, before SS Jurickson Profar struck with an RBI double to get the 'Dads on the board. Skole followed with his first bomb of the day, a mammoth three-run shot to right field, putting Hickory in front, 4-1.
An RBI ground out by Greenville 3B David Renfroe in the fourth chipped the deficit down for the Drive, before they struck for five runs in the top of the fifth against RHP Luke Jackson (L, 5-6) and RHP Andrew Doyle. With two on and one out, DH Travis Shaw collected his first hit as a member of the Drive, an RBI single to center. RF Henry Ramos tied the game with an RBI double, leading to Doyle taking over on the mound with two runners on and one away. Doyle retired 1B Drew Hedman, but CF Jackie Bradley, Jr. drove a three-run shot over the left field wall, giving the Drive the 7-4 lead.
Skole's second home run of the game, a solo shot in the bottom of the fifth, cut the 'Dads deficit to just 7-5, but Greenville stretched it right back out with three runs during the next two stanzas. A Ramos RBI single in the sixth inning made it 8-5, and then an RBI double by Vasquez and an RBI single by SS Xander Bogaerts in the seventh put the finishing touches on the 10-5 victory for Greenville.
