FRESNO, CA - Fresno Grizzlies partner Granite Construction Company won the "Contribution To The Community" award by the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of California at their 2008 Constructor Awards ceremony held in San Francisco on April 5th. Granite was honored with the award for their leadership in the construction of the Junior Grizzlies' Field of Dreams baseball diamond. Granite was one of three finalists nominated for the award in the state of California.
The AGC of California Constructor Awards recognize the diversity and ingenuity of the construction industry throughout the Golden State. The awards ceremony recognized members' achievements for their skill, unique undertakings and ability to address the most difficult challenges contractors encounter. Winners were determined by the 2008 Awards Committee, consisting of 11 engineering and construction professionals.
In 2007, the Central Valley Branch of Granite Construction Company learned of the need for a prime contractor to help build the Field of Dreams, a baseball diamond for the Junior Grizzlies where disabled children would be given the opportunity to play the game. Granite stepped up to the plate and took on the project, utilizing its resources of equipment, expertise, labor and industry contacts to help the Fresno Grizzlies Community Fund.
"We were very fortunate to find a partner like Granite Construction Company, without whom this project never would have been possible," said Andrew Stuebner, Grizzlies' Executive Vice President. "Here in Fresno the impact of Granite on this project, and the community at large, has never been questioned so it's great to see them recognized by the professional community."
Within 80 days of the May 31, 2007 groundbreaking event, the field at Clovis' Gateway High School was transformed from all grass to a rubberized diamond that is safe for all participants wanting to enjoy the game of baseball. The official "first pitch" was thrown out at a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 17th.
The field, which ultimately cost close to $500,000 to build, was made possible by support from Clovis Unified School District, Fansler Foundation, SCJohnson, and St. Agnes Medical Center. In addition to using the field for all Junior Grizzlies games and practices, the field is utilized by CUSD for special education classes and district events.
The Junior Grizzlies will "Play Where The Pros Play" on Saturday, May 3rd at Chukchansi Park. Junior Grizzlies players will begin their day with a baseball clinic with Grizzlies players and conclude by playing an exhibition game prior to the Grizzlies game against the Omaha Royals. Pre-sale ticket proceeds from this game will benefit the Fresno Area Down Syndrome Society. For ticket information contact Ryan Stos at 559.320.HITS.
