State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Clay Holmes yielded just two hits and one walk over five scoreless innings, and the State College Spikes' early offensive surge keyed a 5-0 win over the Jamestown Jammers on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Holmes (5-3) got back on track with the win after suffering defeats in each of his last two starts. The 19-year-old right-hander faced the minimum nine batters over the first three innings, eliciting a pair of double plays in the process. Holmes added a strikeout in the effort, and lowered his earned run average back down to 1.99.
State College (31-34) bolstered Holmes's mound performance with a scoring surge in the early going. Walker Gourley led off the bottom of the first inning with a double, and after a sacrifice bunt, scored on D.J. Crumlich's RBI double to right field to give the Spikes a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, State College broke open the game. Jon Schwind's one-out walk and a single by David Valesente began the barrage, with Jodaneli Carvajal's run-scoring single extending the Spikes' advantage to 2-0. Walker Gourley then reached base on a fielder's choice to load the bases, and Samuel Gonzalez brought in two more runs with a single. Crumlich followed with an RBI groundout to conclude the scoring.
The Spikes also kept up a strong pitching effort after Holmes's tenure with a pair of hurlers in their debut outings for the club. John Kuchno, the Pirates' 18th-round draft choice this year out of Ohio State, made his professional debut with a no-hit sixth inning in which he struck out two. Isaac Sanchez, promoted from the Gulf Coast League Pirates on Thursday, threw two innings and allowed just one walk while striking out three.
Kyle Haynes finished the shutout with a one-hit ninth inning for State College.
Crumlich finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Spikes, who outhit the Jammers 8-5 one night after being held to three hits and no runs.
Jamestown starter Drew Steckenrider (1-2) took the loss after yielding all five State College runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six.
Cody Keefer collected two of the Jammers' five hits, both of which came off of Holmes.
Sunday, the Spikes complete the first half of a six-game homestand with the finale of a three-game series against the Jammers at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Right-hander Jason Creasy (0-4) gets the ball for State College in the 6:05 p.m. rubber match, while Jamestown will go with right-hander Blake Logan (1-1).
