Cutters' comeback falls short in 6-5 loss to Batavia

Batavia allowed Williamsport to hang around, but the Cutters late rally fell a run short in a 6-5 loss to the Muckdogs Saturday night.
Batavia led most of the game, but wasted countless opportunities. The Muckdogs went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and stranded the bases loaded twice. It almost led to a Cutter comeback.
Kyle Hoppy and Cameron Perkins combined to go 5-for-8 with four RBI. Hoppy was 2-for-4, Perkins 3-for-4. Both drove in a pair of runs.
Crosscutters starter Ulises Joaquin had been stellar in six appearances since his return from an appendectomy late last month, but struggled against the Muckdogs. He lasted only three innings, allowing four runs, and three walks on five hits.
Williamsport took the lead in the first. Roman Quinn, Hoppy and Perkins all singled to start the game. Perkins' single plated Quinn for the first run of the night. Chris Serritella then scored Hoppy to give the Cutters an early 2-0 lead.
But after a 1-2-3 first, Joaquin came unglued in the second. Leading 2-1, Joaquin gave up a two-run homer to David Popkins. It gave Batavia a 3-2 lead that they would hold until the end.
Trailing 4-2, Joaquin was replaced by reliever Ramon Oviedo in the fourth. Oviedo's second pitch of the game was drilled over the fence in left field by Matthew Young to up the Muckdog lead to 5-2.
Williamsport struggled on offense against Batavia starter Kyle Helisek, who retired the last 13 Crosscutters he faced. He was replaced in the sixth by Dyllon Nuernberg and the Cutters would take advantage.
Trailing 6-2 in the seventh, Hoppy came to the plate with the bases loaded. On the first pitch, he slapped a grounder through the hole into left to score both Mitch Walding and Jiandido Tromp. Perkins followed in the next at-bat with a bloop-single to left to score Quinn. But with Hoppy in scoring position, Serritella couldn't keep the inning alive off of Lee Stoppleman, grounding out to short.
That would be the last threat for the Cutters, who would go on to lose 6-5 and drop to 25-40 on the season.
