Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - In front of Captain Jack Sparrow and his band of pirates, Matt Marquis went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, while Mike Augliera got things off on a solid note with three scoreless innings as the Lowell Spinners cruised to their fourth consecutive win Saturday night at LeLacheur Park, topping the Connecticut Tigers, 6-2.
Lowell (32-33) got the scoring started, taking advantage of a leadoff walk by Matty Johnson, who promptly stole second base. A sacrifice fly from Mike Miller advanced Johnson to third and he would come around to score on a single to right by birthday boy Deven Marrero, giving the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
Augliera would cruise through the first three innings on the mound for the Spinners, allowing just one hit while striking out five, throwing 29-of-36 pitches for strikes and Tyler Wilson picked up right where Augliera left off, keeping the Tigers at bay.
The Spinners would add to the lead in the sixth inning with Marquis delivering the big hit. Marrero worked a one-out walk, advancing to second on a single through the hole by Jake Davies. With two-outs, a passed ball advanced both men into scoring position and a wild pitch scored Marrero. Marquis followed by taking a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall to give the Spinners a 4-0 lead.
Connecticut (28-36) finally broke through after seven scoreless in Wilson's final inning of work. Jordan Dean led off the inning, reaching on a fielding error by Mookie Betts. After a strike out, Edgar Corcino tripled to right field, scoring Dean. Jake Stewart followed with a sacrifice fly, cutting the Spinners' lead to 4-2.
Lowell answered in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of their own. Marrero led off the inning with a single to left-center and Davies followed with an infield single of his own. A forceout put runners on the corners, with Betts advancing to second on a wild pitch. Marquis drove home Marrero with a single up the middle and a Dreily Guerrero sacrifice fly brought home Betts to give the Spinners a 6-2 lead that would hold as the final.
Following Augliera's strong strart, Wilson (5-0, 4.43) picked up the win, allowing the two unearned runs on two hits and a walk. He struck out six in his five innings of long relief. Yunior Ortega closed out the win with a scoreless ninth, pitching around a pair of hits. He did not walk or strike out a batter.
Marquis paced the Spinner offense, while Marrero, celebrating his 22nd birthday, went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Davies also added a two-hit night.
The Spinners go for the series sweep Sunday evening on Nickelodeon Day at the ballpark. Spongebob Squarepants will be on hand as Pat Light (0-2, 3.38) gets the ball for a 5:05 first pitch.
