Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Garrett Schifsky scored twice and Jack Williams made 45 saves in 5-2 Waterloo Black Hawks win against the Fargo Force Friday at Scheels Arena during the final game for both teams ahead of the USHL's holiday break.
The Black Hawks generated a lot of early chances but were turned away. Momentum turned the Force's direction following an unsuccessful Waterloo power play, and Fargo eventually capitalized with 1:14 remining in the period. Andre Gasseau lifted a shot from the slot under the crossbar to finish a three-on-two rush.
Fargo followed up their late first period goal with a score 1:09 into the second. With the Force on a power play, Cole Knuble shot from the left point and the puck found its way into the net as Williams ended up on the ice with contact near the top of the crease.
However, a nine-minute span rallied Waterloo from the 2-0 deficit into the lead. John Waldron started the run at 6:38, taking a pass from Michael LaStarza and snapping the puck under the crossbar from the inside edge of the left circle.
Then James Hong forced a turned over just over five minutes later, allowing Owen Baker to go to the net front and flip a backhander past Louden Hogg. Waterloo pulled ahead on the power play at 15:25; Schifsky dodged a check at center, wheeled around a defender in the left circle, and wired a puck to the top corner. It was in and out in a split second, and the immediate ruling was "no goal," but a review proved the Hawks had taken the lead.
Mixed in, Williams made the save of the night without his stick from the seat of his pants. Sitting up just in time, he brought his glove and blocker together to deny an almost certain goal on Max Smolinski's attempt from the slot. It was one of his 19 saves in the period.
The 3-2 score held until a late four-on-four sequence. Waldron followed-up his own initial chance, moving to the right circle and slinging the puck back toward the net. Tucker Ness was planted there to bat the setup past Hogg at 15:43.
Then Schifsky finished the night with 14.9 seconds remaining; Conner Schneider pushed the puck through the neutral zone and Schifsky caught up with it to score into an open net.
Fargo was credited with at least 13 shots in every period, but Williams' solid night allowed the Hawks to make the comeback.
The Black Hawks' next game is on Tuesday, December 28th versus the Sioux City Musketeers; the matchup at Young Arena begins at 7:05 p.m. For seats, visit tickets.waterlooblackhawks.com.
