Lemyre's Hat Trick Punctuates Fighting Saints' Dominant 6-1 Win over Caps

Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Dubuque Fighting Saints have won eight of the last nine games. The Saints put forth another dominant 60-minute effort, scored three goals in the first period, and outshot the Capitols 18-3 in the opening frame, en route to a 6-1 romp over the Madison Capitols on Friday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center.

Both the offense and defense were on point. The Saints scored six goals on 32 shots, good for an 18.7% shooting percentage, and held the opposition to one goal in back-to-back games. Paxton Geisel's 22-save effort on Friday night was his eighth consecutive win. The winning streak dates all the way back to November 24.

Not to be lost in the outcome of the game, Tristan Lemyre's first career USHL hat trick stoked the offense to another strong effort. While he did not start the scoring, he punctuated it throughout.

Mikey DeAngelo started the scoring at the 4:09 mark as the Saints' token pressure forced a turnover down deep. Stephen Halliday and Connor Kurth teamed up to set up DeAngelo for his first goal since October 2.

Lemyre scored his first of the night on a shot pass from reigning USHL Forward of the Week Ryan Beck to double the lead midway through the first. The Fighting Saints had ceded the first shot against midway through the period but responded immediately to continue the offensive onslaught. Axel Kumlin added a goal to close out the first period scoring with a shot from the point.

Madison got a goal back in the second period, but Lemyre turning the trick erased any momentum created by the visitors. He notched his second goal of the night on a breakaway, and his third of the night on a pinpoint pass from Beck at the side of the net.

Peter Kramer capped the scoring for the Fighting Saints.

Dubuque's penalty kill had to be strong late in the first period, and early in the second period. After going up 3-0, the Saints were shorthanded, and killed off that opportunity. Kenny Connors was flagged down for a double minor for high sticking early in the second period and the Saints kept the Caps from getting a shot on goal.

The Fighting Saints and the Capitols will play the final game before the holiday break on Saturday, December 18 at 7:05 p.m. The game caps off a home-and-home series.
