SANTA CRUZ, CA - The Texas Legends took their first win against the Santa Cruz Warriors on the road Friday night 115-108.
The match stayed close through four quarters with 23 lead changes and 13 ties. The Legends got off to a hot start, taking their largest lead of 10 in the first quarter behind nine points from Tu Holloway. Santa Cruz's Verdell Jones responded with eight points of his own as the two teams tied it up at 27-all to round out the first. The Warriors outshot Texas 65% to 38% in the second and grabbed a five-point lead heading into the locker room.
Holloway came out firing in the third with 15 points, shooting a perfect 3-of-3 from outside and 4-of-4 from the foul line. Double free throws from Brandon Ashley would increase the Legends' lead to eight with two and a half remaining in the third, but Santa Cruz streaked through an 11-2 run to steal the lead seconds away from the final quarter. The fourth quarter saw 12 of the night's 23 lead swaps as Santa Cruz found an answer for every Legends basket to remain within three points. With less than two minutes to play, Jones cut the home team's deficit to one, but the Legends responded with six straight points to seal the victory.
Holloway fired off a season-high 36 points and 9 assists while also grabbing 6 rebounds. He shot 11-of-18 on the night and 4-of-6 from outside while seeing a perfect 10-of-10 from the foul line. Micheal Eric tabbed the team's only double-double of 18 points, 10 rebounds and blocked 3 shots. Patrick Miller grabbed a team-high 4 steals off the bench.
Jones and Elliot Williams combined for 50 points to lead the Warriors. Jarred Shaw came off the bench for 17 points and a team-high 8 rebounds.
