Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors and former Condors defenseman Kevin Barrett are proud to announce the first-ever Condors Hockey-Thon to fight breast cancer in late March. The Hockey-Thon will consist of 27 consecutive hours of hockey to benefit the Link to Life Resource Center.
The activities begin with the Condors home game against the Gwinnett Gladiators on Friday, March 25th. Immediately following the game at the Rabobank Arena, the first squad of the Hockey-Thon will take the ice with a Condors Legends game, featuring former Condors such as Kevin Barrett, current Condors Assistant Coach Paul Willett, Jamie Cooke, Quinn Fair, Brian McCarthy and Glen Mears among others. They will play at the Rabobank Arena until Midnight, when the game will move to the Bakersfield Ice Sports Center. From Midnight to 9:00 a.m. the adults will participate and youth hockey will take over from 9:00 until 1:00 p.m. Then it will move back to the Rabobank Arena until 5:00 p.m. when celebrities will take the ice until 6:00 p.m. - right up to pre-game warm ups for the Condors Saturday night match against Gwinnett. The celebrity game will include former Condors as well as prominent members of the community and members of the media.
The event is open to the general hockey-playing public under one condition: all participants must raise $200 in pledges to contribute to the cause. Link to Life will also have a table at both Condors games that weekend to accept additional donations. Anyone interested in participating should attend the informational meeting held by Barrett at the Rabobank Arena Convention Center Potato Room on Thursday, February 24th at 7:00 p.m.
"Ever since my mom lost her battle to breast cancer my eyes were opened to a whole new phenomenon that was out there," said Barrett. "I wanted to do something to make people aware that this is a serious disease and hockey is the one thing I know about, so it makes sense. Some forms of breast cancer are terminal and some are curable with the proper testing and treatment. Link to Life gives those kinds of things back to our community to those people that can't afford it."
"Kudos to 'Bear' for organizing this huge undertaking," said BSE President Matthew Riley. "When he approached us with the Hockey- Thon idea for our Condors Fighting Cancer Night, we jumped right away. It's an exciting opportunity for all the hockey players here in town to participate in an around-the-clock hockey game. We hope to have a big check to present to Link to Life when it's all over."
