Lynx make a deal with Las Vegas

February 23, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release

Moving two steps closer in their attempt to solve the playoff puzzle, the Augusta Lynx today announced the acquisition of defenseman Regan Darby and center Doug Wright from the Las Vegas Wranglers in exchange for forward Matt Schmidt and future considerations.

Originally a fourth round draft choice, 90th overall, for the Vancouver Canucks in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Darby turned pro in the 2000-01 season with the Kansas City Blades of the now-defunct International Hockey League. The 6-2, 200 lb. Estevan, Saskatchewan native has spent time in the ECHL with the Columbia Inferno, and won the Kelly Cup last year with the Idaho Steelheads. This year with Las Vegas, Darby has a goal and three points to go with 155 minutes in penalties. Over the course of his career, the 24 year-old has played 247 games as a pro, tallying four goals and 23 points along with 831 PIMs.

Wright, also 24, spent four years with Providence College before turning pro last season with the Wranglers. The Kamsak, Saskatchewan native tallied 20 goals and 38 points along with 104 PIMs for Las Vegas, plus earned a one-game call up with the AHL's Chicago Wolves last year, recording an assist in the contest. This season the 6-2, 190 lb. center has seven goals and 12 points in 36 games and 36 PIMs.

"Darby is a natural leader, a guy who we've needed in the locker room this year," said Lynx head coach and director of hockey operations Stan Drulia. "He's a rugged player, hard-working, a guy who "plumbs it out" and gets the job done. Wright gives us another option up the middle, someone who can be like a Todd Bennett-type player with 18-20 goals and a solid two-way presence."

Schmidt, 23, is in his first professional season out of Norwich University. So far this year, the Markham, Ontario native has posted a goal and eight points for the Lynx along with six minutes in penalties. The 6-2, 186 lb. wing had a three game assist streak from November 13 – 20 this year. In four years at Norwich, Schmidt played 113 games, scoring 73 goals and totaling 127 points. He was also part of the school's 2003 NCAA Division III Championship team.

The Lynx get back to action with a home and home series with the Gwinnett Gladiators, starting Friday night on the road and returning home for a 7:35 pm contest at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center. Sunday, the Lynx will host the Greenville Grrrowl at 4:05 pm. Pre-game show coverage kicks off one half-hour before game time on your Home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630.
