High Point-Thomasville HiToms News Release

THOMASVILLE, N.C. - The HiToms and Copperheads split a doubleheader to close down the 2011 Coastal Plain League season on Tuesday night at historic Finch Field. The Tommies took game one 8-3 while the Copperheads pulled out a 3-2 win in 12 innings to capture the victory in game two.

The HiToms (31-25, 18-11) managed to take game one with four runs in the fifth inning off Zach Benard (L, 1-3). In the frame, Jacob Fisher and Garrett Koster both doubled home runs while two Copperhead errors in the inning aided the HiToms cause.

Scott Elitzky (W, 1-0) worked five strong innings in the opening game to pick up his first victory as a HiTom.

In game two, Asheboro (30-25, 14-14) scored a run in the seventh to tie the game at one and force extra innings. The Copperheads then scored again in the top of the 11th to take a lead at 2-1. However, the HiToms answered in the bottom half on a lead-off solo home run from James Harris to knot the score.

But, Asheboro answered back in the 12th with a run as Dylan Thompson (L, 0-1) allowed Tanner Merritt to single home Noah Holmes and gave the Copperheads a 3-2 lead they wouldn't relinquish as they earned a 3-2 win in 12 innings to split the doubleheader.

The Tommies are back in action on Thursday night in round one of the Pettit Cup playoffs as they face off with the Gastonia Grizzlies. The HiToms will have home field advantage in the first round and will travel to Sims Legion Park on Thursday before hosting games two and three (if needed) at Finch Field on Friday and Saturday.

Tickets for the playoff games are currently on sale and fans can visit www.hitoms.com for tickets or call the HiToms office at 336-472-8667.
