Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins were knocked out of contention for a spot in the Petitt Cup Playoffs after losing the final game of the regular season, 7-2, to the Wilmington Sharks. With a win and some help from favorable results elsewhere around the Coastal Plain League, the Marlins could have landed a spot as the eighth and final team into postseason play.
In his first appearance of the summer, Lenoir Community College's Scotty Ginn pitched very well for the Marlins. The right-hander tossed 5.1 innings of relief without allowing a run and only surrendering two hits. Ginn walked just two batters, hit one, and struck out five.
Designated hitter Chase McDonald entered the night one RBI away from tying the single-season record set by Jason Dubois of the Rocky Mount RockFish in 1997. With an RBI-single in the seventh, McDonald tied the mark and did not see another at-bat to attempt to break the record. In his final campaign for his CPL Hitter of the Year candidacy, McDonald went 3-for-4 with the one run batted in.
The loss was the third in three games while hosting the Sharks in the final two days of the season, and the Marlins finish the summer with a record of 27-29.
