Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - It was all fun and games on Tuesday at J.P. Riddle Stadium, with outfielders pitching and pitchers hitting. But it was just the calm before the storm for the Fayetteville SwampDogs.

The Florence RedWolves swept a doubleheader in the final regular season games of the season for both teams, 7-0 and 7-4. The second game featured a lineup of eight pitchers playing the field, while four position players combined to work all seven innings on the mound.

Jimmie Davis and Brandon Huffman each had two hits, while Cory Kent, Derek Brooks, Alex Belew, and Dom Macaluso each banged out a base hit as the SwampDogs scored four runs against the tandem of Kit Carter (1-0) and Mitchell Knox of Florence (27-29, 12-16). Catcher K.C. Weber, the only true position player to start for the SwampDogs in the nightcap, also chipped in with a double.

Meanwhile Jay Cannon (0-1) made the start and allowed two runs in two innings. Usually a second baseman or outfielder, Cannon allowed three hits and struck out two in his first outing of the year for Fayetteville (34-22, 17-11).

John Hogan, who entered the game on a full sprint and did a pop-up slide at the mound, pitched two innings and allowed four runs on six hits. Sal Giardina allowed just a solo homerun in his two innings of work, and Dylan Brown pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

The pitchers at the plate provided more offense than the regular lineup could muster in game one against Matthew Campbell (2-0). The RedWolves starter allowed just two hits in five innings, and the offense did enough against Brandon Browne (1-2) to snap the SwampDogs five-game winning streak against Florence.

Sam Morgan and Andrew Alford each doubled for the SwampDogs in a losing effort, while starter Alex Belew did not allow a run in his two innings of work before being relieved by Browne.

Fayetteville will now meet division rival the Wilmington Sharks in the first round of the Petitt Cup playoffs. The SwampDogs will start the playoffs on Thursday in Wilmington, before returning home to host game two on Friday night at J.P. Riddle Stadium at 7:05 p.m.
