Grizzlies Sink Owls in Season Finale

GASTONIA, N.C. - The Forest City Owls ended the 2011 regular season on a down note, falling to the Gastonia Grizzlies, 5-1, at Sims Legion Park on Tuesday night. The Owls drop to 14-14 in the second half and 30-25 overall, while the Grizzlies improve to 16-12 in the second half and 29-26 overall.
Forest City called on Ryan Hander (Nebraska) to take the mound. Hander worked five innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on ten hits, recording two strikeouts and two walks. Gastonia countered with Robby Van Cour (New Mexico State). Van Cour tossed eight innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and two walks while also recording two strikeouts. Van Cour earned the victory and Hander took the loss.
Gastonia got on the scoreboard first, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Benji Jackson (Gardner-Webb) crossed the plate on Jordan Lurie's (UNC Asheville) groundout to first to open the scoring. Dan Hennigan (Franklin Pierce) scored on the following at-bat, racing home on Dylan Nasiatka's (Hofstra) groundout to short. The Grizzlies owned a 2-0 lead after three innings.
The Grizzlies added three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gastonia scored its first run of the inning on Nasiatka's RBI single, which plated Lurie. Two at-bats later, Justin Vsquez (Belmont Abbey) doubled Nasiatka home. Adam Lavelle (Western Kentucky) concluded Gastonia's scoring binge by singling Vsquez home. The Grizzlies enjoyed a commanding 5-0 lead through five frames.
Forest City got on the board in the top of the eighth inning on Konstantine Diamaduros's (Wofford) solo home run. The Grizzlies maintained a 5-1 lead heading into the eighth inning. Kris Hall (Lee) worked a scoreless ninth to preserve the victory for Gastonia.
The Owls are awaiting their opponent for the first round of the CPL Petitt Cup Playoffs. Forest City will open the postseason on the road on Thursday night.
