Hitmen Win First Regular Season Game

Calgary, AB - After coming off of an impressive 4-0 pre-season start, the Calgary Hitmen opened up the regular season in Swift current Friday night clinching the first win of the season.

The matchup proved to be a game of special teams with the clubs combing for 12 penalties. The first goal of the game came from Calgary's power play with Carson Wetsch scoring his first Western Hockey League goal, with helpers from Grayden Siepmann and Steel Quiring. The lone goal of the game wasn't answered until the second period when Luke Mistelbacher found the back of the net for Swift Current on a wraparound to tie the game.

Calgary was able to regain the lead early in the third period with credit to Maxim Muranov. Tomis Marinkovic earned the assist on Muranov's tally making it his first WHL point. The rest of the game saw little even strength action, with the teams trading penalties throughout the third. Calgary headed to the box with under three minutes to go allowing Swift Current to make one last push, but Calgary was able to hold off the home team securing the 2-1 win.

Calgary goaltender Ethan Buenaventura was second star of the game making 17 saves. Grayden Siepmann finished the night with two assists earning him first star.

Calgary returns to action tomorrow, Saturday September 24 for their home opener in a rematch against the Broncos. Game time is 7:00 p.m. at the Scotiabank Saddledome. Tickets are available at HitmenHockey.com/Tickets.
