Hitmen Score Overtime Win
November 23, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB - The Brandon Wheat Kings opened up a 2-game Western Hockey League weekend home stand Friday night by dropping a disappointing 4-3 overtime decision to the visiting Calgary Hitmen.
Carson Focht's goal was the overtime winner at the 3:40 mark, snapping Brandon's mini 2-game win streak.
Trailing 2-0 after one period, the Wheat Kings took their only lead of the game by scoring three unanswered in the second, before Calgary evened things up in the opening minute of the third.
Connor Gutenberg, Marcus Sekundiak and Cole Reinhardt scored goals for the Wheat Kings, while Orca Wiesblatt had two goals and Blake Allan a single for the winners.
With the loss, Brandon's record slipped to 11-13-1-0.
Despite a slow start, Wheat Kings' coach Dave Lowry says it's encouraging to see the team continue to battle.
"We're certainly not quitting on games," Lowry told Branden Crowe of Q Country Sports. "Regardless of what the score is we have the ability to push back and get even. In the 2nd period, we did a lot of good things. I don't like playing from behind, it's tough to win in this league and behind early all comes down to preparation."
Friday's game was marred by a serious injury to Brandon rookie center Nolan Ritchie. The 17-year old local product appeared to lose an edge and fall awkwardly into the side boards.
The Wheat Kings return to action on Saturday night when they play host to Caiden Daley, Zach Wytinck and the Regina Pats at 7:30pm.
Not only is Saturday's game featuring a special Salute to Western Manitoba School Patrols, it's another Saturday Kids Fun Day at Westoba Place.
Children's tickets are $5 (plus agency fee) and for every one purchased, you will receive a "free" McDonalds Happy Meal.
As well, Center Plate will be offering special concession discounts and Jumparoo will be located on the main concourse with a wide variety of inflatables for the entire family.
Saturday's School Patrol Salute is a presentation of SUBWAY, The Brandon Sun, ChemTrade, Maple Leaf and CAA Manitoba.
Tickets to the game are on sale at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling (204) 726-3555 or online at keystonecentre.com.
