Hitmen Ready to Host One Ticket, One Tree

March 7, 2019 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Calgary Hitmen News Release

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club will help the Alberta forest recovery process with their One Ticket, One Tree game tomorrow, Friday, Mar. 8 against the Edmonton Oil Kings. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m. at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Not only is it a meeting of two of the top three teams in the Western Hockey League's Central Division, but for each game day and group ticket sold to Friday's game, the Hitmen will plant a tree for reforestation projects in the province.

This pilot project, first announced at the Calgary Zoo on National Tree Day Sept. 26, 2018 also saw Hitmen players in the community this season doing their part to reduce their ecological footprint by raising awareness to local environmental issues. Highlights included Hitmen Go Green videos on upcycling, city cleanup, water conservation and alternative energy along with recycling and composting.

"As our country's leading tree champion, Tree Canada has had a long working history of helping the people of Calgary and Albertans by planting trees after natural disasters. We were there to respond after the Calgary floods in 2013, Snowtember 2014 and ongoing with the Fort McMurray wildfires," said Tree Canada President, Michael Rosen. "Amazingly, there are few sports teams that show ultimate team spirit by way of their community involvement in regards to the environment. I give credit to the leadership, players and fans of the Calgary Hitmen for their initiative in helping us re-green Fort McMurray, where fire devastated one of Canada's hardest working cities in 2016."

All funds raised through the One Ticket, One Tree game will be gifted to Tree Canada to plant seedlings in Fort McMurray.

"We are very fortunate through the support of our fans and participation of our players to be able to help in a tangible and meaningful way," said Rob Kerr, Assistant Manager of Business Operations. "Through the Hitmen Go Green video series we were able to shed some light on various environmental initiatives that the Calgary community is already involved with. Our players were welcomed by several environmental leaders throughout the season and we are excited to see this program grow."
