Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Lethbridge, AB. - The Brandon Wheat Kings six game road trip hit Lethbridge Wednesday night and the hometown Hurricanes came up 4-1 winners in what was a critical game for both clubs.

Thanks to some help from the Calgary Hitmen, the Wheat Kings remain tied for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Hockey League's Eastern Conference.

While Red Deer was idle, Calgary's 6-5 overtime victory over Medicine Hat leaves Brandon tied with Red Deer and two points back of the Tigers in the battle for the two wild card berths. The Wheat Kings and Tigers have five games remaining in the 2018-19 regular season while Red Deer has one game in hand.

Losers of three of four games (0-2-1-0) on this pivotal six game western road trip, the Wheat Kings will now travel to Red Deer for a Friday night date with the Rebels, before closing out the excursion the following night in Medicine Hat.

How the Wheat Kings fare this weekend could go a long ways in determining whether they qualify for post season play for the fifth consecutive season.

In Wednesday's game, former Regina Pat Jake Leschyshyn scored twice and Carl Tetachuk turned aside 27 shots for the winners, who clinched a WHL playoff berth with the win.

Luka Burzan scored in a losing cause for the Wheat Kings, whose record slipped to 30-25-4-4 on the season.

Following a scoreless opening period, the Hurricanes got rolling in the second - scoring three unanswered goals and never looked back.

Following this weekend's games in Alberta, the Wheat Kings will return home to host two of their final three regular season games, beginning Wednesday night - Rain Check Night - against the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors.

Any unused tickets (dated November 23rd to February 22nd) can be exchanged at the Keystone Centre box office for a free ticket to this game (regular box office agency fees apply).

Saturday, March 16th vs. Regina meanwhile is the annual Wheat Kings' Awards Night at Westoba Place.
