Red Deer, AB - Ben King scored at 4:56 of overtime to lift the Red Deer Rebels to a 6-5 victory over the Calgary Hitmen on Friday night at Peavey Mart Centrium.
The win propels the Rebels into the WHL's Eastern Conference Semi-Final as they capture their first-round series 4-1.
Maxim Muranov led the Hitmen with a pair of goals with singles coming off the sticks of David Adaszynski, Brandon Whynott and Oliver Tulk while Grayden Siepmann chipped in a pair of assists.
Mats Lindgren scored twice for Red Deer while Kalen Lind, Matteo Fabrizi and Christoffer Sedoff also found the back of the net. It was Sedoff who forced the extra session with 2:42 remaining in the third period while Jayden Grubbe tallied five assists.
The Rebels outshot Calgary 44-24 in a contest that was tied 2-2 after the first period and 3-3 through 40 minutes.
The game ended the junior careers of Hitmen 20-year-old graduating players captain Riley Fiddler-Schultz, goaltender Brayden Peters and forward Jacob Wright. Fiddler-Schultz spent five seasons with the club, Peters four and Wright one.
