Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH)--Four Captains pitchers combined on a three-hitter, and P.J. Hiser had two hits, including a solo home run, as the Captains defeated Hagerstown 3-1 Tuesday night at Classic Park.
The Captains (15-10) won five of seven games on the homestand, including three of four against the Suns (8-17). Lake County trails first-place Lakewood by 2 1/2 games in the SAL North race. Lakewood defeated Greensboro 6-2 in 12 innings Tuesday.
The Captains were held hitless by Hagerstown's Deolis Guerra (3-6) for the first 4 2/3 innings. Hiser delivered a clean single in the fifth for the Captains' first hit. After a walk to Josh Noviskey, Guerra gave up an RBI single to Niuman Romero to tie the game 1-1.
The Captains took the lead in the sixth when Chris De La Cruz reached second on an error, went to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch by Guerra for a 2-1 lead. It was only the fourth wild pitch of the season by Guerra in 54 1/3 innings.
Hiser greeted Guerra with a solo homer leading off the seventh inning to make it 3-1. It was Hiser's fourth of the year.
Guerra, one of the youngest players in minor league baseball at age 17, gave up only four hits in the game and struck out eight.
Frank Herrmann started for the Captains and scattered three hits over five innings. He allowed one unearned run in the second inning when he dropped a pop-up by Leivi Ventura and gave up an RBI double to Drew Butera. Herrmann, who hasn't won a decision since June 10th, walked only one and struck out four.
Jason Schutt (1-1) came on for Herrmann and tossed two hitless and scoreless frames to earn his first SAL win. Lefty Doodle Hicks made his Captains debut and worked a hitless eighth. In the ninth, Matt Davis retired the side in order for his league-best 22nd save.
The Captains have won eight of the last 10 games. After an off-day Wednesday, the Captains will travel to Charleston, West Virginia for a four-game series against the West Virginia Power Thursday through Sunday. The Captains will begin another eight-game homestand at Classic Park next Monday, July 24th. For tickets call 440-954-WINS.
