Hinshaw's Late Homer Rallies Baby Cakes

June 7, 2017 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Memphis Redbirds News Release

Chad Hinshaw hit a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning, rallying the New Orleans Baby Cakes to a 5-4 win over the Memphis Redbirds on Wednesday afternoon.

The lead traded hands four times in the game. KC Serna reached on a bunt single to extend the eighth inning, and Hinshaw sent his first Triple-A home run over the left field fence to provide the decisive blow.

Drew Steckenrider worked around a leadoff single in the ninth to secure his third save, giving the Baby Cakes back-to-back victories over the first-place Redbirds.

The teams were scoreless until the fourth, when Destin Hood roped a single and scored on Cal Towey 's two-out liner to center.

Memphis answered in the top of the fifth by capitalizing on a pair of 'Cakes errors. With one out and the bases loaded, Todd Cunningham bounced into a potential inning-ending double play, but David Vidal's throw to first skipped in the dirt, allowing two runs to score.

An inning later, Hood cranked a two-run homer to put New Orleans back in front. It was Hood's 14th of the season, tied for fourth-most in the Pacific Coast League, and gave him a team-leading 41 RBI.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Memphis rallied in the seventh against reliever Brandon Cunniff . Patrick Wisdom launched a towering two-run homer of his own into a stiff wind blowing in from left field, his 10th of the year, giving the Redbirds a 4-3 advantage.

Victor Payano (1-2) was credited with the win by tossing a scoreless eighth inning, after starter Chris O'Grady limited Memphis to two unearned runs and two hits. O'Grady established season highs by pitching six innings and recording seven strikeouts.

Miguel Socolovich (0-1) suffered the blown save and the loss for Memphis. Former Tulane standout Josh Zeid scattered three runs and five hits across six innings.
