TACOMA, Wash. - With a rehabbing Felix Hernandez on the mound, the Tacoma Rainiers (32-25) dropped a 12-9 decision to the Reno Aces (37-22) on Tuesday night at Cheney Stadium.

Hernandez, making his first rehab appearance since going on the Mariners 10-day disabled list on April 26, worked 2.0 innings and allowed five runs on four hits. He walked two, struck out three, and threw 50 pitches (28 strikes).

Reno ventured onto the scoreboard first with a five-run top of the second that was highlighted by a grand slam home run off the bat of Ildemaro Vargas. Tacoma quickly answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to cut into the Aces lead; RBI doubles from second baseman Danny Muno and catcher Tuffy Gosewisch brought in the Rainiers runs.

Tacoma rocketed out to a 9-5 lead with seven runs in the bottom of the third, marking the largest single inning of the season for the Rainiers. After an RBI single from third baseman D.J. Peterson and a walk from Muno to load the bases, left fielder Tyler O'Neill blasted a grand slam home run over the left field wall that put the Rainiers out in front, 9-5. It was the first grand slam of O'Neill's Triple-A career, and the third of the season for Tacoma.

Peterson finished the night with a team-high three hits; he scored twice and drove in one RBI. Right fielder Zach Shank (2x4, R) and Gosewisch (2x3, R, 2 2B, RBI, BB) also tallied multiple hits.

The Rainiers would not venture back onto the scoreboard over the remainder of the night. The Aces tied the game with four runs in the top of the fourth, retook the lead with a pair of runs in the sixth, and added an insurance run in the seventh to win the game, 12-9.

Tacoma right-hander Rob Whalen (0-3, 5.33) faces off against Reno southpaw Anthony Banda (5-3, 4.70) as the series continues on Sunday morning. First pitch from Cheney Stadium is set for 11:35 a.m. PT.
