Hillsboro Hops News Release

Hillsboro, OR --- The Hillsboro Hops returned to Ron Tonkin Field after a nine-day home hiatus and took care of business, beating the visiting Eugene Emeralds 5-2 in the series opener.

A big night from Kevin Cron and a crucial seventh inning triple from Stryker Trahan keyed the Hops (32-20) to their 10th win of the NWL's second half. Cron absolutely pounded a ball over the left field fence in the third inning, good for his fourth home run as a Hop.

The Hops drew first blood thanks to a major Emeralds' error in the second inning. Zach Esquerra scored from third on a botched fly ball catch in right field, and Jordan Parr scored on a Taylor Ratliff sac fly shortly after moving to third base due to the error.

Three runs was all Hops' starter Austin Platt needed. The right-hander didn't do anything spectacular, but pitched his way to his third win of the season as he recorded five innings of three hit ball, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks.

Platt's two runs allowed came in the fourth and fifth innings as the Emeralds strung together multiple hits in both innings to put one on the board each frame.

Whatever the Emeralds (22-30) started to stir up with the sticks against Platt was utterly obliterated by the Hops bullpen. Dan Savas, Luis Ramirez and Mason McCullough combined to pitch four innings of near perfect baseball. The trio didn't allow a single hit, and if not for a McCullough walk in the ninth, Eugene would have failed to put a runner on base past the fifth inning. McCullough recorded the first save of his professional career, striking out the last Emerald he saw with a 97 mile per hour fastball.

Cron finished the night 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Parr also registered two hits, both singles.

Game two of the Eugene series is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. tomorrow night at Ron Tonkin Field. Be sure to catch all the live action on Rip City Radio 620 or www.foxsportsradio.com. Pre-game starts at 6:35.
