Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

KEIZER, Ore. - Thursday Night was the first of three Cancer Awareness Nights at Volcanoes Stadium, and fans poured into the ballpark ready to honor and celebrate cancer survivors. The celebrations continued throughout the evening as the Volcanoes went on to defeat the Boise Hawks 9-5.

The Volcanoes grabbed a lead they would not give back in the bottom of the third when Ryder Jones demolished a ball that bounced high off Keizer Station Boulevard for a two-run homerun.

"It was a 3-1 count and I was looking for a fastball up, and he gave me one up and in," Jones said. "The ball traveled pretty good."

Boise got the scoring started in the top of the second. David Bote began the inning with an infield single that shortstop Christian Arroyo could not handle. He then stole second base and was knocked in on a hard line drive off the bat of Bryant Flete.

The Volcanoes would not let the Hawks keep the lead for long. After three singles, Johneshwy Fargas drew a walk with the bases loaded to push across the tying run. After two, the score was tied at one a piece.

Salem-Keizer continued its momentum with two more runs in the bottom of the third when Ryder Jones came to bat with two outs and Arroyo on third base. On a 3-1 count, Jones launched one of the longest and highest homeruns Volcanoes Stadium has ever seen, deep over the right field wall.

"As soon as I hit it, I knew it was gone," Jones said.

Boise shrunk the lead to one run in an inning that could have been much worse for the Volcanoes. The top of the fourth saw three hits, two walks, and a balk, but a base-running blunder as well as a Charcer Burks bases-loaded strike out helped Salem-Keizer maintain the lead.

The Volcanoes took the run right back from the Hawks thanks to a Hunter Cole single, a T Relaford double, and a Seth Harrison sacrifice fly to center field.

The lead was doubled in the bottom of the sixth. Cole led off the inning with his third hit, a double down the left field line. Relaford was then hit by a pitch, and Harrison hit his second sacrifice fly of the night to score Cole. Then, with two outs, Arroyo blasted a ball off the wall in left center to plate Relaford and make the score 6-2.

Boise answered with two runs in the top of the third. DJ Snelten came into the game for his first appearance with the Volcanoes; he surrendered a two-run home run over the right field wall to catcher Mark Zagunis.

The Salem-Keizer lead was in jeopardy in the top of the eighth when Boise loaded the bases off of E.J. Encinosa. Cameron McVey replaced Encinosa, and despite allowing a run to score on a wild pitch, he struck out the three hitters he faced and helped the Volcanoes carry a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the eighth.

With two outs and nobody on, the Volcanoes were able to rally for three more runs. Harrison scored Fargas on an infield single, his third RBI on the night. Arroyo followed with a shot over the head of the center fielder Rashad Crawford for an RBI double.

The insurance runs were plenty, as McVey shut down the Hawks in the ninth to secure the 9-5 victory.

Nick Gonzalez struck out eight batters through four and two thirds innings, and got the win for the Volcanoes.

Harrison finished with three RBIs and Cole finished with three base hits.

Up Next: Game two of the series and day two of Cancer Awareness Weekend takes place at Volcanoes Stadium. Jose Reyes will take the mound as the Volcanoes look to continue what has been a hot second half.
