
Dust Devils Let Early Lead Slip Away

The Tri-City Dust Devils jumped out to an early lead Thursday night, but the Vancouver Canadians' bats came alive as they would take game one of this series 8-6 at Gesa Stadium. Tri-City (6-8 Second Half, 20-32 Overall) had the tying run on in the eighth inning, but they weren't able to drive the run in.
Dust Devils outfielders Marcos Derkes, Drew Weeks and Ryan Garvey led the way offensively. Derkes went 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk and three runs and was also hit by a pitch in the game. Weeks went 3-for-4 with a walk, a double, a triple, a stolen base, two runs scored and two RBIs on the night. Garvey went 2-for-4 with a walk and a double. Third baseman Shane Hoelscher continued his hot streak at the plate, going 2-for-4 on the night with a run, an RBI and a walk. Hoelscher is in the midst of a 10-game hitting streak for Tri-City.
Dust Devils starter Ryan Castellani got the first eight batters he faced out before a walk in the third inning. Castellani finished the night after 3 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits and a pair of walks with two strikeouts.
Dust Devils reliever Billy Waltrip threw a perfect ninth inning. Waltrip has only allowed one earned run in his last nine appearances dating back to July 11th.
Right-handed reliever Logan Sawyer (1-2) took the loss for Tri-City. Sawyer pitched 3 1/3 innings. He gave up three runs on six hits with two strikeouts.
Vancouver (6-8 Second Half, 31-21 Overall) starting pitcher Zak Wasilewski went five innings and allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks. Wasilewski (3-1) got the win for the Canadians, his third of the season.
The Dust Devils and Canadians will play game two of this three game series at 7:15 p.m. on Friday night at Gesa Stadium. It will be Faith Night at the ballpark presented by Meyer's Auto Tech. Tri-City will hand the ball to right hander Blake Shouse (1-6) to take on right hander Chase Mallard (3-1) for Vancouver. Great seats are still available for Friday's game.
