May 18, 2021 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

After the best offensive performance of the season on Sunday night, the Pelicans lineup came up with just one hit in Tuesday's loss to the Lynchburg Hillcats 2-0. This was the second time the Pelicans have been shut out this season and one hit marks a new season-low.

Myrtle Beach falls below .500 once again to 6-7, while Lynchburg continues to lead the Low-A East, North division with a 10-3 record.

Yeison Santana (1-4) came up with the only hit for the Birds in the seventh inning. Sam Thoresen (0-2) took the loss after throwing just under three innings with two earned runs, two walks, and four strikeouts.

The Hillcats only managed to collect three hits in their lineup with Will Bartlett (2-4, 3B) tallying the only multi-hit game for any player on Tuesday night. Micah Pries (1-4, RBI) drove in the only run batted in of the ballgame.

Xzavion Curry (2-0) was masterful on the mound with 11 strikeouts through 6.1 innings and would dominate to earn the win. Jerson Ramirez picked up his first save after closing down the Birds in the ninth.

All the runs scored in the two-hour 44-minute game were scored in the Hillcats' half of the third inning. Cody Farhat drew a walk on Thoresen with one out and stole second to get in scoring position. Thoresen threw two wild pitches to Angel Martinez and Pries to advance Farhat to third, then to score and put Lynchburg up 1-0. Pries then doubled with a grounder in the gap to score Martinez and make the lead 2-0. Thoresen was taken out of the game after a comebacker off the bat of Jhonkensy Noel in the third.

The Pelicans' lineup struggled all night with 11 strikeouts from Hillcats' starter Curry and five more from reliever Andrew Misiaszek.

Yeison Santana broke the no-hitter for Lynchburg with a single to lead off the seventh inning and advanced into scoring position by stealing second, his third bag of the season. Santana was stranded at second after three-straight strikeouts from Misiaszek.

Ramirez came in to close out the ninth for the Hillcats and struck out Edmond Americaan to lead it off, then forced a groundout from Santana to quickly put Myrtle Beach down to their final out. Howard worked a walk, the only walk of the game for the Birds. After a walk-off grand slam on Sunday night, Matt Mervis came up in another rally situation but fell down on strikes, and Lynchburg won the first game of the series 2-0. Ramirez earned his first save of the year.

Myrtle Beach and Lynchburg will meet for game two tomorrow at 6:30. Richard Gallardo is set to take the mound for the Pelicans.
