Where No ALPB Team Has Ever Gone Before: The High Point Rockers became the first team in Atlantic League history to beat Lexington at Lexington Legends Ballpark when they did so on Sunday with a 6-0 win. The Rockers were no-hit for five-plus innings before Jerry Downs ripped an RBI single to right for the lead, and High Point never looked back. Luke Westphal continued his brilliance on the mound with seven shutout innings while allowing three hits and striking out nine. Stephen Cardullo and Jerry Downs both extended lengthy streaks, with Cardullo recording a hit in his 11th straight game while Downs reached base for the 10th straight game. The win marked the first for the Rockers against the Legends this year, and broke Lexington's 13-game home winning streak to start the year.
No-Hit? No Problem: Sunday marked the second time last week that the Rockers had been no-hit through five innings, and for the second time they ended up with a victory. Last Wednesday (June 23) in game two of a doubleheader, Arik Sikula no-hit High Point for 6.1 innings before Jerry Downs ended the no-hitter and took the lead with a two-run homer. Downs was the man again on Sunday, as his RBI single was the first hit for the Rockers and scored the first run of the ballgame.
STUUUUUUUUUUUU: With two doubles on Sunday, Stuart Levy extended an insane streak that's seen him record seven straight extra base hits. Levy recorded eight hits on the week, with a single in the fifth inning of last Tuesday's game in West Virginia being the only one that didn't go for an extra base hit. Against Lexington, Levy recorded six hits, all of them doubles, and currently has doubled in four of his last six at-bats. On the season, Levy has eight doubles, one shy of James McOwen's nine which leads the team.
Preston Being Preston: After a scoreless inning of relief on Sunday, Preston Gainey extended his scoreless streak to 8.1 innings to start the 2021 season. He's recorded 25 outs on the season, with 13 of them coming via the strikeout (52%). Opponents are hitting .138 against Gainey, and are striking out 37% of the time.
Back-to-Back: A win tonight for the Rockers would be the first time since the first home series that High Point has won back to back games. They last won consecutive games between 5/30 and 6/2 when they won five in a row.
Against the Revs: The Rockers opened the 2021 season against the Revolution in York, winning three of four. The Rockers dropped the Opening Day game, but won three straight, including a 13-1 win with seven first inning runs in the series finale. Today marks the first of six games against York at Truist Point, and the final time the Rockers play the Revolution during the first half.
