High Flying Mallards Tame the Beast

BRAMPTON, ON -Despite a much-improved performance throughout the opening two frames of the game, it was more of the same from the Brampton Beast as they were unable to put together a full 60 minutes of play on Thursday night, falling to the Quad City Mallards by a score of 5-1.
For a Brampton team that has trailed after the first period in three of their four matches so far this season, it was important for the team to get off to a good start from the opening faceoff, and things looked promising early on.
Although the puck seemed to be bouncing around errantly in the opening minutes of the game, both goaltenders were equal to the task to keep the contest scoreless, with the action back and forth throughout the first 20 minutes of action. The Beast's second and third lines were able to generate several quality scoring chances late in the period by getting the puck in past the Mallard's defense, but despite half-a-dozen good looks on net both score and shot clock remained tied.
Coming out of the gate in the second, it was the speed and grit line of Stephon Thorne, Tyson Fawcett and Linden Bahm who were able to grab momentum for the Beast, followed by the equally physical line of Cal Wild, Jason Pitton and Josh McQuade. The mounting pressure resulted in several agonizingly close scoring chances before Tyler Donati was finally able to stickhandle one past rookie goaltender Evan Mosher for his third of the season, putting Brampton up 1-0. Alternate captain Chad Painchaud picked up an assist for his team-leading 6th point this season, while Mathew Maione also recorded a helper for his second point in as many games with the Beast.
With all the momentum seemingly going one way the lead was not to last, as less than a minute later the Mallards evened things up on the powerplay as a broken spin play by Justin Fox in front of the Beast net left Matt Duffy wide open for his first of the year, with Mario Lamoureux also getting an assist. Despite the goal, the Beast were able to maintain the edge in momentum, keeping the Mallards hemmed in their own zone for entire shifts at a time, but they were unable to find the all-important next goal.
It looked like the game would remain tied heading into the third period - something the Beast have yet to experience this season as they have been playing from behind in each of their previous four games - until Lamoureux managed to jam the puck behind Grant Rollheiser for his second point of the night and first goal of the season with just 6 seconds remaining in the second.
Just like that, it was as if the air went out of the tires for the Beast, who for the second straight game were unable to make up a third-period deficit to force extra time. Donati, Painchaud and Pitton all had good opportunities to begin cutting into the Mallard lead in the third, but it seemed like the Beast couldn't catch a break. Just 31 seconds into the frame Rollheiser made an incredible stop on a Jeff Lee breakaway, only to have the puck take a strange bounce off the end glass and rebound directly to Joe Perry for the easy goal to make it 3-1.
Jeff Lee would add to his point totals later in the period with his second and third goals of the season, coming just over two minutes apart in the dying moments of the third to seal the win for the Mallards, who outshot the Beast 48-36.
With the loss, Brampton fell to 0-4-1 on the season, but have a good shot at turning things around on their current 5-game home stand against. The Beast's next home game will be tomorrow, November 7 at 7:30 pm, when they welcome fans to the Powerade Centre for Country Night.
