Spokane Chiefs News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Chiefs visited the Rose City on Sunday night to wrap up a grueling 4 game stretch over the past five days including three in a row. It was the first of six games between the U.S. Division rivals this season. For the Portland Winterhawks it was also the third of a three-in-three schedule.
Berkly Catton was the busiest player of the first period as he found the net to make it 1-0 Spokane at 9:13. He also had four penalty minutes in the frame.
For Catton it was his third goal in the last two Chiefs' road games. Chase Bertholet and Chase Harrington were named to the scoresheet with assists on Catton's goal.
16-year-old Ryan Miller would score his first two career goals for Portland later in the frame, and the Winterhawks would head into intermission with a 2-1 lead.
The second period was an even, scoreless affair with both teams fatigued and feeling each other out.
The third period was a different matter entirely as the Chiefs exploded for four (!) goals to blow this one open and win it 5-2.
Saige Weinstein tied it up at the 7:14 mark with a clean left wing wrister. The Colorado Avalanche free agent signee picked up his first of the season with helpers from Carter Streek and Cam Parr (following a late scoring change).
Rasmus Ekström would score just 31 seconds later and all of a sudden Spokane had taken the lead.
After a late scoring change it was Chase Bertholet and Dawson Cowan (!) who received the assists. The game was tight down the stretch until Cheveldayoff stole the puck with the Portland netminder on the bench.
Portland would go on the power play and pull the goalie again for a 6-on-4 advantage, looking to claw one back. Instead, it was a Portland shot sent wide that caromed off the boards, all the way down the ice, and into the empty net. Roulette was the closest forward to the play but it was Dawson Cowan credited with the goalie goal on the play.
The Chiefs finished off an emphatic 5-2 victory with Dawson Cowan once again the star of the show. The Chiefs' goaltender made 34 huge saves and even found the net himself (sort-of). After a late scoring change, Cowan was also credited with an assist on Spokane's third goal of the night.
Spokane was 0/2 on the power play but went 6/6 on the penalty kill. The Chiefs outshot Portland 37-36 with 11+ shots in each of the three periods.
The Chiefs return home to the Spokane Arena on Wednesday night for another edition of the TicketsWest Player Magnet Giveaway, puck drop is 7:05 PM.
